Q is for Questions

Woo-wee, it was hard to come up with a design-related item for ‘Q!’ I had to get creative (and used my mom as a source), and I’ve decided that ‘Q’ stands for Questions. I’m often asked interior design questions, so I’ve chosen the top 3 most-asked questions and I’m providing my insight! Here it goes…

1. What should I look for when buying furniture at a thrift store, yard sale, or consignment store?

Make sure anything you buy, whether it’s furniture, clothing, or any other items, is of good quality. When purchasing furniture at a thrift store or other discount place, make sure to try the item out. If it’s a chair, sit in it and make sure it’s comfortable. Check to make sure the upholstery is good and the springs aren’t popping up through the fabric.

Make sure that anything with legs (chairs, tables, etc.) doesn’t wobble or shake. If it’s a bit loose, make sure a simple tightening of the screws will fix this problem. Don’t spend a lot of money on anything made of particle board or plastic. While they may be inexpensive, they can also be cheaply made and will eventually need to be replaced. Spend your money wisely now and go for quality pieces with “good bones” (pretty lines, solid foundation, etc.).

If you have any doubts about a piece, don’t buy it!

2. What do you think is the cheapest way to make a room look better and different?

Paint, paint, paint! It’s AMAZING what paint can do for both a room and a piece of furniture. My all-time favorite thing to do is to take a boring, run of the mill piece of furniture and spray paint it in a bright color. The piece instantly looks brand new and exciting! The same goes for a room. Paint the whole room a new color or, if you’re feeling a bit hesitant about painting the whole place, pick one wall to paint and allow it to serve as your accent wall. You’ll be amazed at how just one coat of paint can completely transform the look and feel of a space.

3. What should every room have in it as part of its decor?

Art work! No matter what type of art work you admire (finger paintings done by your children, Ansel Adams photographs, or idyllic garden scenes), make sure to display it in all of your spaces. Art work adds warmth to a space and allows your personality to shine in a room. If you live in a place where you’re not permitted to paint the walls, hanging art work can be the next best solution. Hang photos or paintings with a common subject matter together to create a gallery wall or lean art work on bookshelves or your mantle. The opportunities are endless!

Look What I Found!

I’m helping a good friend of mine decorate her first home and I’m so excited! I’ve been looking around at various thrift stores and consignment shops to find some items for them, and I think I hit the jackpot at our local Salvation Army. I can’t believe these amazing pieces are so well-made yet so inexpensive!

TV Console for $99.00

Armoire for $88.00

I found these chairs at two separate stores and I’m thinking about buying both of them to use in my own house some day.

The high back chair with the seashell print would be so glamorous in the living room of a beach house (I have fantasies of having a second home on Cape Cod…a girl can dream).

Sea Shell Chair for $50.00

This chair is fabulous! I love its clean lines. I want to recover it with a pink ikat fabric like the one below.

Boldly Going Where No One Has Gone Before…

This past weekend, my Mama and I decided to visit some thrift stores and junkyards that we have always wanted to visit, but had never gotten around to doing so.

One store we went into had piles of junk stacked so high that you couldn’t see the light coming through the windows. There was no sense of organization and the kitchen supplies rested precariously on top of a baby grand piano. Overwhelmed by the amount of inventory, Mama and I decided to hit the road and continue on to our next “nifty thrifty” adventure.

There are no words for the next place we went to. I have often driven by this place that sits on the side of the highway that connects Gainesville and Ocala. The phrase “junkyard” doesn’t even begin to do justice to this fascinating place. It has neither a name nor set operating hours. When the cattle gate with the faded sign saying “Open” is swung wide, that’s when you can enter. Thankfully, we were there during the appropriate time.

Tables upon Tables of Junk

Discarded dishes, old Mason jars, crumbling furniture, rusty toilets, and baby dolls with missing appendages were stacked high on tables. Lined up (somewhat) neatly for as far as the eye could see, these tables contained anything you could imagine to put into your home. We found a shed and inside it, there were pretty floral paintings and some nautical prints. There was also the occasional photo that was worthy of being on “Awkward Family Photos.”

The Land of Abandoned Toilets

We finally found a table for the nautical room, but it’s definitely going to need a lot of love. It’s rusting and peeling in some parts, so  I’m going to scrape off the old paint and spray the base of the table white. The glass top is in dire need of Goo-Gone, so I’m starting that task tomorrow!

The Glass Table in Need of TLC

We purchased the glass table and base along with five prints for $27.00 (which my Mama still thought was a bit too steep considering the environment in which they were kept).

Four Things Friday

I’ve been working for the weekend and it’s finally here! Woohoo!

1. I LOVE these five mantras for home design.

2. I’ve decided I want to try this on my coffee table. I love the look of stacked books in neat little piles.

3. This plate swoop is so neat! And I think it would be really easy to accomplish. Flea markets and garage sales always have great patterned china, and Lowe’s has plate hanging wall hooks! Definitely want to try this somewhere.

4. This is an image that I have on my desktop that makes me smile. It’s so beautiful! Hope it makes y’all smile, too!

Who Wants to Come with Me?

While flipping through this month’s issue of Glamour, I came across a little note about the 127 Corridor Sale: The World’s Longest Yardsale.

Every year this yard sale stretches from Hudson, Michigan to Gadsden, Alabama…that’s 675 miles of yard sale treasures! I squealed with delight at the possibility of a road trip to go “junkin’” (a term my mama and grandmother have always called perusing yard sales and thrift stores). I don’t think I can resist making a pilgrimage!

Extreme Makeover: Apartment Edition!

My best friend lives in an adorable two-bedroom town home. The decor of the apartment was left over from the previous owner and didn’t match her personal style. She agreed to let me use it as the model for my blog, so I can apply all the techniques and tips I’m giving you, my readers, to transform her space from “ho hum” to “holy cow!”

Everyone always enjoys a makeover, so I will update you often on my progress on my best friend’s living room and kitchen. Pictures before, during, and after the makeover will be posted frequently.

First, I think some pops of color would add some spark to this living room. I plan to scour flea markets and thrift stores for furniture that can be refurbished and then used throughout the kitchen and living room. I’ll also look for great pieces of art work that reflect her personality and will add warmth to the space.

This project is going to be challenging, but I look forward to finding great deals and providing helpful tips for finding these great savings! I’ll also be offering a step-by-step “how to” video guide on refurbishing furniture. Check back soon!

Check out these “before” images! And if you have any suggestions about decor, let me know, I’d love to hear from you!

Bargain Shop at These Stores!

There are so many second-hand stores that offer amazing pieces of furniture, art work, fabric, and other home decor items for awesome prices. My favorite part is that you are not only saving money by shopping at these second-hand stores, you are also contributing to the mission of the organizations that sponsor these stores. It’s a win-win for everyone!
