The Design Style of Charleston, South Carolina

What do you do or where do you go to gain inspiration for your projects? I know some people go for a run (yuck, I hate exercise), some take some quiet time to meditate, and others travel to a favorite place to inspire them.

When I think of my design style and from what and where I gain inspiration, I always think of Charleston. Though I am a native Floridian, you will often hear me proclaim the wonders of this beautiful city in my beloved adopted state of South Carolina. It has the best food, the greatest music, the nicest people, and the most beautiful scenery and architecture this side of the Mississippi.

Whether strolling down King Street window shopping or ogling out the window of your car at the beautiful homes on the Battery, Charleston has something to offer for everyone.

My favorite part of Charleston has to be the amazing architecture of the homes. Their wide front porches (perfect for sipping cocktails on a muggy summer day), their shutters that are both decorative and useful (hurricanes often threaten this city and you need those to protect your windows), and their beautiful colors always stop me in my tracks. The design of the homes in Charleston is much like Charleston itself —timeless, classic, and quietly elegant.

What places do you enjoy visiting for their architecture? The concrete and steel skyscrapers of New York? The moss-covered brick homes in Savannah? I’d love to hear about new places I should check out!

Four Things Friday

Yay, it’s Friday! And, even better…it’s a three day weekend! What are your Memorial Day plans? Remember to thank a veteran and remember those who have given their lives to allow us to live freely in this amazing country!

Here are some fun things I’ve found around the Web…

1. These stairs go along with my earlier post about mirrored backsplashes. I’m obsessed!

2. I hate to camp, but this makeshift tent looks so comfy and relaxing. Maybe I’ll set one up for myself to read under this weekend.

3. One of my favorite cities in the entire world is Charleston, South Carolina. I LOVE this print. This print is by Julia Rothman who makes fabulous prints and illustrations for a variety of publications.

4. These flowers make me super excited about summer coming around the corner.

Four Things Friday

I’ve had the lyrics to that Rebecca Black song “Friday” stuck in my head since the beginning of the week! I’m so glad it’s the weekend, y’all!

Here are some things I’m loving…

1. One of my favorite places in the whole wide world is Greenville, South Carolina. A good friend of mine told me about these prints that show the skyline of major cities in the U.S. She loves Greenville as much as I do, so she ordered this. I’m in love.

2. Great advice for shopping at a thrift store.

3. Along with the Mason jars I’m going to be painting to use at my best friend’s bridal shower, I want to incorporate these easy to make cake stands.

4. I will be making a monogrammed pumpkin similar to this one as it gets closer to Halloween. I’m so excited!
