Gyotaku Art Work

Alright, readers, I have to divulge my latest art love. Gyotaku (pronounced ‘Gee-Oh-Tah-Ku’) is the art of fish rubbing on rice or parchment paper. I have seen this type of art work before at art festivals, but it wasn’t until I learned that a good friend of ours, Bill Lodzinski, used this technique to create his own art work that I truly fell in love. All of his work can be found here at Paper Fish Gallery.

Mr. Lodzinski held an exhibition of his art work this summer and I fell in love with this piece. I loved the colors, but most of all, I loved the name of the piece. Entitled “Skipping School,” you can notice that one fish (the red one) is swimming against the other fish who are all going the same direction. Being the literary nerd that I am, I loved the play on words and meanings. I’m a big believer in going against the current, so I loved that this piece of art represents this.

My dad and Mr. Lodzinski are great friends, and unfortunately, he was unable to make the exhibition. I was sending him photos of his work via text message and I told him how much I liked this particular piece.

He loved it, too, and I thought my brothers and I should purchase it for him for Father’s Day. By the time I conferred with my brothers, however, the painting had already been sold. I was so bummed!

Cut to a month later. I came home from what had been a long, disheartening day and there on my bed was the exact painting I had wanted to get my dad! He was the buyer of the painting and bought it for me as a surprise! I was so thrilled and I cannot wait to properly hang it in my new apartment.

This Front Door Rocks My Socks!

My friend, Cata, and her hilarious husband, Ryan, live just up the street from me, and I am crazy about their home. Cata painted the door red (who doesn’t love a red front door?) and went all out when decorating for fall.

She made the wreath herself with supplies from our local craft store for a grand total of around $10.00. The color combination of the flowers and pumpkins, along with the adorable wreath, make this my favorite autumn door. Yay for Fall!

Four Things Friday

Woohoo, it’s the weekend! And it’s the start of college football!!! I can’t wait to cheer on my beloved Gators this weekend as they play Bowling Green. What are your plans?

I’m loving these items from around the Web. Make sure to check them out!

1. What an awesome idea! This desk/dresser combination is so practical.

2. I love this grouping of small sunburst mirrors. So pretty!

3. I think this abstract painting could be easily replicated. The hot pink color is so spicy…I love it!

4. I want this green door. It would bring a smile to my face every time I came home.

Island Chic: A West Indies Design Scheme for Bedroom Four

There’s been one room at the veterans’ home that has been driving me nuts because it was definitely lacking direction as far as a design scheme goes.

I had pillows and a headboard (purchased for $20.00 at my favorite resale store), but no real idea what I wanted to do. I scoured Pinterest and some of my favorite home décor magazines for ideas, and finally came up with the idea of using a British Colonial/West Indies theme.

The West Indies design look consists of breezy bed linens, wooden furniture (think bamboo and cane), and bright accent pieces. This article in Coastal Living definitely inspired me to try out this look!

This wooden table was rescued from a Dumpster, painted turquoise, and will serve as the table at the end of the bed. Its narrow top and unique shape makes it perfect for the end of the full size bed.

I like to have one statement piece in each room I decorate and this elephant definitely makes an impression. She was originally a cherry wood color, but I wanted to tie in more turquoise, so she got a nice coat of the spray paint I used on the end table. “Ellie” the Elephant now serves as the room’s statement piece and mascot.

I plan on finding some funky bamboo lamps to use for lighting and I think making some abstract art with palm fronds could be really cool. I’m excited about the potential for this room now that it finally has a direction!

Four Things Friday

Happy Friday, y’all! I’m having the best time here in Salt Lake City at the Altitude Design Summit. I’ve already learned so much and I can’t wait to share everything I’ve learned with you!

Here are a few things I’m loving right now…

1. This salt and watercolor tutorial looks so cool and easy to do. I’m a huge fan of abstract art work, so I definitely want to try this soon!

2. I’ve seen tutorials for mercury glass everywhere lately, and I love the way it looks! This tutorial from Design*Sponge (oh, Grace Bonney, I adore thee!) is really informative. I think I might try this out in my monochromatic room at the veterans’ home.

3. I wish I had an IKEA right here in my hometown, but alas, the closest one to me is about two hours away. I love seeing what people do to enhance their IKEA furniture. IKEA Hackers features some of the awesome ways that people add their own spin to their IKEA furniture. This piece of furniture is so cool…who doesn’t love some good nailhead detailing?

4. Just looking at a picture of this chandelier makes me happy. Can you imagine what it would be like to see it in real life? I think if it moved, it would sound like a babbling brook…so calming!

Top 5 Reasons Why I Love Spray Paint

I’m sure y’all have noticed by now that I love me some spray paint.  In my opinion, it’s the easiest, cheapest, and most fun way to turn a dull piece of furniture from drab to fab.

In the spirit of the New Year (when I feel like there’s constantly a  countdown or top ten list), below are my top 5 reasons why I love spray paint.

1. It’s cheap! A can of Valspar (my favorite) costs $6.47. I spray painted two side tables with just one can!

2. It doesn’t leave behind brush strokes (easing my mind and my OCD tendencies).

3. It dries quickly! Usually after about 2 hours, you can apply another layer.

4. Easy clean up and easy storage: Just pop the cap back on and put it in a cool, dry place. No messy drips or gooey paintbrushes to clean.

5. There’s a wide array of colors and sheens (glossy, matte, etc.) to choose from. Any color you can think of is most likely available in spray paint!

S is for Stripes

If I had my choice, my whole house would consist of stripes. I love them! They add such  personality and spice to a room. Vertical stripes, horizontal stripes, thick stripes, thin stripes…it  doesn’t matter what they look like, I adore them all. The best part about stripes is that they  don’t’ make a room look heavy like some horizontal outfits might.

I can’t decide if I like horizontal or vertical stripes better. They’re both fabulous! Which ones do  you like better?

I think only one wall in a room should have stripes so your room doesn’t end up looking like a fun house. Bright colors would be great for a playroom or children’s room, don’t you think?

This is a video I found about how to paint a wall with stripes. It’s pretty easy to do since all it really requires is a lot of painter’s tape and patience. Happy painting, y’all!

E is for Entryway

Ahh, the entryway! As your guests come into your home, this is the first area that they will see. It’s not just a place to hang your coat or take off your shoes; this space should also give a hint to your personal style as well as set the tone for the rest of your home. First impressions are everything, so you want your entryway to be all that it can be.

Entryways can range from a sweeping staircase (a la Tara in “Gone with the Wind”) to a half-moon table with a stack of interesting books and a fun lamp. No matter what your entryway looks like, it should be welcoming and warm to both you and your guests.

Home Decor and Fashion Collide

As a lover of both home decor and fashion, I’ve found that this season’s hottest looks on the runway are remarkably similar to the hottest trends in home decor for spring and summer.

Painted Floors, Photo by materialgirlsblog.com

The bold colors seen on the runway (think cobalt blue, emerald green, bright orange) would look great on one wall in a playroom, kitchen, or breakfast nook. They add a “punch” of color and attitude to a space. Because of their brightness, I wouldn’t put these in a bathroom or bedroom. It’s always best to keep your sleeping and bathing spaces calm!

I’ve also recently become obsessed with painted floors. They’re such a cool way to add some spark to your room without having to have a boring rug or carpet. Painted a bright color with a shiny lacquer over it, your floors will be anything but boring.

As I’ve said before, if you’re wary of trying out these trends, (bright colors, florals, etc.), just use them on a pillow, chair, or small home decor item. This way, you can be in on the trend, but still keep your peace of mind.

Progress on Extreme Makeover: Apartment Edition!

Extreme Makeover: Apartment Edition continues! We spent the day painting the living room a light color with a fantastic name: Ice Rink Blue. It almost appears white with hints of blue hues, which is so calming and perfect for the coastal theme we’re trying to achieve!

With three people painting, it took us about four hours to paint the walls and the trim (a short break for milkshakes can also be factored in).

We had only one ladder, so we each took turns balancing precariously from its rungs.

When we were finished (covered in paint and sweating like pigs), we stood back to admire our work. The room looked at least two times bigger and was so bright even without any lights on! This was exactly what I hoped to bring to the area: an airy feel that provided light and a greater sense of space.

Mission accomplished!
