M is for Maps

I know I’ve discussed my love of maps on here before, but I’m doing it again! They’re such a fun way to decorate. You can frame old maps (I’m dying to frame old sea charts and fishing maps in a beach house some day), or wallpaper one wall with a series of maps. They’re readily available and pretty inexpensive, so what’s not to love?

I think it would be really neat to wallpaper a wall in a playroom and put stars on the places where you and your family have visited. It would be such a fun way to remember all the amazing places you’ve traveled. Wouldn’t you just die to have maps like these used in your home for decor? Ahhhh….

Four Things Friday

Woo, it’s been a long week! I hope y’all have had a great week! Take some time this weekend to check out this stuff I found around the Web…

1. I loved this article about how to decorate a studio apartment. Great ideas for making the most of out of your small spaces.

2. Campaign dressers are my second favorite furniture obsession (the first being Chesterfield sofas). This one is so amazing!

3. I’ve finally found the perfect way to use maps as wallpaper! This was in House Beautiful and I’m madly in love. Must try it soon!

4. The print on this chair is FABULOUS. Not sure I would match it to the curtains, but it’s so funky and fun!

Four Things Friday

1. This article reignited my passion for decorating, my blog, and my dream of becoming an established home décor blogger and writer. Hope it inspires you to tackle a new project!

2. I see these types of tables for sale at thrift stores all the time! I never thought about making them into shelves by stacking them on top of each other.

3. I love old maps! What a nifty way to repurpose a chair and incorporate a map. I think I want to make one for my best friend’s classroom.

4. This isn’t home décor-related, but as the holidays roll around, I want to spotlight great causes. My good friend, Spencer, has started a campaign through Generosity Water that will raise money to provide clean water for an entire village in Africa. For more information, check out this website. I’m going to donate to the cause in my friends’ names…instant Christmas gift!

N is for Nautical

I have always been fascinated by the sea. Maybe it’s because I’ve grown up on the water or maybe it’s because I’ve read countless books about adventures on the high seas.

I love old sea charts and maps, and I plan to either frame them or use them as wallpaper in my home some day. The colors of the ocean (navy, grey, and white) are such soothing hues. My love for the sea has definitely impacted my design aesthetic because I’m always drawn to anything using these colors.

It’s best to stay away from too many nautical elements (buoys, oars, lighthouses, etc.) or else your room will become kitschy. Having one to two nautical pieces should be the perfect way to incorporate the ocean into your design scheme. I’d stick with navy and white (I’m a sucker) and other neutral colors. A bowl of shells or a print of a ship could also add a touch of nautical.

Using nautical elements in interior design can be both playful like this children’s bedroom, or understated and chic like this display of nautical photos and a captain’s wheel. I don’t think you have to be near the ocean to include nautical elements in your home. Having these reminders of the sea in your room could actually provide a brief escape from your landlocked existence!
