What Would Christian Grey’s Penthouse Apartment Look Like?

I’m sure all of you have heard of the titillating erotic trilogy, 50 Shades of Grey. I won’t get into the plot line (this isn’t Playboy), but it has definitely captured the attention of millions of women around the world. The main character, Christian Grey, is an aloof yet sexually alluring billionaire who woos a young college student. The author describes his appearance (chiseled abs, patrician features…essentially, perfection), his clothing (tailored, crisp shirts), and his lavish penthouse apartment.

When I read books, I often like to think of what the characters’ surroundings would look like. Grey’s apartment is described as luxurious with the most up-to-date technology and world class art. I think his home would be mostly modern with clean lines. I envision Sarrinen tables, Eames chairs, and lots of abstract art work. The color scheme would be predominantly white, black, and grey with sleek furniture. The home would have no personal touches such as photographs or mementos from travels. Below are some of the images that I think would inspire Mr. Grey when he (or his minions) was decorating his penthouse.

Q is for Questions

Woo-wee, it was hard to come up with a design-related item for ‘Q!’ I had to get creative (and used my mom as a source), and I’ve decided that ‘Q’ stands for Questions. I’m often asked interior design questions, so I’ve chosen the top 3 most-asked questions and I’m providing my insight! Here it goes…

1. What should I look for when buying furniture at a thrift store, yard sale, or consignment store?

Make sure anything you buy, whether it’s furniture, clothing, or any other items, is of good quality. When purchasing furniture at a thrift store or other discount place, make sure to try the item out. If it’s a chair, sit in it and make sure it’s comfortable. Check to make sure the upholstery is good and the springs aren’t popping up through the fabric.

Make sure that anything with legs (chairs, tables, etc.) doesn’t wobble or shake. If it’s a bit loose, make sure a simple tightening of the screws will fix this problem. Don’t spend a lot of money on anything made of particle board or plastic. While they may be inexpensive, they can also be cheaply made and will eventually need to be replaced. Spend your money wisely now and go for quality pieces with “good bones” (pretty lines, solid foundation, etc.).

If you have any doubts about a piece, don’t buy it!

2. What do you think is the cheapest way to make a room look better and different?

Paint, paint, paint! It’s AMAZING what paint can do for both a room and a piece of furniture. My all-time favorite thing to do is to take a boring, run of the mill piece of furniture and spray paint it in a bright color. The piece instantly looks brand new and exciting! The same goes for a room. Paint the whole room a new color or, if you’re feeling a bit hesitant about painting the whole place, pick one wall to paint and allow it to serve as your accent wall. You’ll be amazed at how just one coat of paint can completely transform the look and feel of a space.

3. What should every room have in it as part of its decor?

Art work! No matter what type of art work you admire (finger paintings done by your children, Ansel Adams photographs, or idyllic garden scenes), make sure to display it in all of your spaces. Art work adds warmth to a space and allows your personality to shine in a room. If you live in a place where you’re not permitted to paint the walls, hanging art work can be the next best solution. Hang photos or paintings with a common subject matter together to create a gallery wall or lean art work on bookshelves or your mantle. The opportunities are endless!

Look What We Found!

My love for thrift stores and “the hunt” for bargains on home goods came from my mom (cue the song “I Get It From My Mama”). She is often “popping in” to thrift stores, garage sales, and antique shops to see what treasures she might find.

On a trip to a local church-run thrift store, Mama found this amazing couch. It’ s about eight feet long and the wood detail needs to be painted (I’m thinking white), but I actually love the fabric color and pattern! It’s a pale blue, almost mint-y color with a subtle diamond pattern. The shape is so neat…I’m obsessed!

Couch Purchased from Thrift Store

I’m going to do some intense research to determine what style this couch is; I’m thinking it’s very Victorian since the shape and wood detailing is reminiscent of that time period.

Wood detailing

It would be great to put in a large living room atop layered rugs. The best part is it was only $165.00! I’m sure it would cost a lot more had it been at an estate sale or antiques shop.

Fabric Color and Pattern

Do y’all have any ideas for how I should paint it and/or reupholster it? I’d love suggestions!

Look What I Found!

I’m helping a good friend of mine decorate her first home and I’m so excited! I’ve been looking around at various thrift stores and consignment shops to find some items for them, and I think I hit the jackpot at our local Salvation Army. I can’t believe these amazing pieces are so well-made yet so inexpensive!

TV Console for $99.00

Armoire for $88.00

I found these chairs at two separate stores and I’m thinking about buying both of them to use in my own house some day.

The high back chair with the seashell print would be so glamorous in the living room of a beach house (I have fantasies of having a second home on Cape Cod…a girl can dream).

This chair is fabulous! I love its clean lines. I want to recover it with a pink ikat fabric like the one below.

Island Chic: A West Indies Design Scheme for Bedroom Four

There’s been one room at the veterans’ home that has been driving me nuts because it was definitely lacking direction as far as a design scheme goes.

I had pillows and a headboard (purchased for $20.00 at my favorite resale store), but no real idea what I wanted to do. I scoured Pinterest and some of my favorite home décor magazines for ideas, and finally came up with the idea of using a British Colonial/West Indies theme.

The West Indies design look consists of breezy bed linens, wooden furniture (think bamboo and cane), and bright accent pieces. This article in Coastal Living definitely inspired me to try out this look!

This wooden table was rescued from a Dumpster, painted turquoise, and will serve as the table at the end of the bed. Its narrow top and unique shape makes it perfect for the end of the full size bed.

I like to have one statement piece in each room I decorate and this elephant definitely makes an impression. She was originally a cherry wood color, but I wanted to tie in more turquoise, so she got a nice coat of the spray paint I used on the end table. “Ellie” the Elephant now serves as the room’s statement piece and mascot.

I plan on finding some funky bamboo lamps to use for lighting and I think making some abstract art with palm fronds could be really cool. I’m excited about the potential for this room now that it finally has a direction!

Four Things Friday

Happy Friday, y’all! I’m having the best time here in Salt Lake City at the Altitude Design Summit. I’ve already learned so much and I can’t wait to share everything I’ve learned with you!

Here are a few things I’m loving right now…

1. This salt and watercolor tutorial looks so cool and easy to do. I’m a huge fan of abstract art work, so I definitely want to try this soon!

2. I’ve seen tutorials for mercury glass everywhere lately, and I love the way it looks! This tutorial from Design*Sponge (oh, Grace Bonney, I adore thee!) is really informative. I think I might try this out in my monochromatic room at the veterans’ home.

3. I wish I had an IKEA right here in my hometown, but alas, the closest one to me is about two hours away. I love seeing what people do to enhance their IKEA furniture. IKEA Hackers features some of the awesome ways that people add their own spin to their IKEA furniture. This piece of furniture is so cool…who doesn’t love some good nailhead detailing?

4. Just looking at a picture of this chandelier makes me happy. Can you imagine what it would be like to see it in real life? I think if it moved, it would sound like a babbling brook…so calming!

My Latest Obsession…Campaign Furniture

Photo from Belladwella

Every time I visit a garage sale, thrift store, or estate sale, I hope there’s a campaign dresser hidden somewhere. I am OBSESSED with campaign furniture, particularly dressers and desks. These are usually very expensive and sought after because of their unique history.  (For example, a desk is going for $1,950.00 on eBay. Definitely not in this girl’s budget!)

These pieces of furniture were designed for the British military to be easy to pack up and carry while marching. They could easily be screwed together and stacked on top of each other when in use, providing quick and easy storage.

Photo from Southern Hospitality

Sometimes, people sell campaign furniture without knowing its worth. For example, some campaign dressers are for sale on Craigslist for $40-60!

This is a makeover of an old campaign dresser that Jenny Komenda of Little Green Notebook did. I love the way the white looks so crisp!

Mirror Mirror on the Wall (or On the Side Table)

Is there anything better than mirrored furniture? I think not! Mirrored furniture provides a reflective surface off which light can bounce, creating the illusion of space. It’s also so darn incredibly chic! Mirrored furniture, particularly mirrored vanities and boudoirs, glam up any room, providing an old Hollywood feel to your space.

Much like lucite, mirrored furniture is often pretty expensive. I’ve found some less expensive versions at TJ Maxx and Target, but I’m still hoping to find a mirrored piece during my trips to thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales.

Citron…Try It On!

I’m loving this shade for summer! It adds such a pop of bright color to a room, instantly making your dwelling interesting and eye-catching. The picture below features chairs with Chippendale fretwork (the lattice-looking design on the back) in this hot shade. Wouldn’t this be a great place to sit while having a yummy, cool mojito on a hot summer day?

Exciting New Project!

Hey, y’all!

I hope this finds you having a fantastic start to your weekend. I wanted to let you know about a special project I’ll be working on this summer: I’m helping to refurbish and re-decorate an old hotel in my hometown, which will then become a temporary residence for homeless veterans.

Ocala Ritz Historic Inn, Photo from Hotel-Online.com

The Ritz Historic Inn, an 85 year-old building near the heart of downtown Ocala, will serve as a transitional housing facility for 50 veterans.

The Ocala community has generously donated furniture, bedding, wall decor, and other room accessories in order to make each room a welcoming, warm dwelling for each veteran. The awesome people of Volunteers of America Florida have made this project possible.

I’ll be posting pictures and updating y’all on my progress on the project throughout the summer. It’s such an amazing honor to be able to give back in a small way to these men  and women who have given so much to our country.

If you have any design or decor suggestions for me, let me know!

For more information about this project, please visit their Facebook page.
