Color Combination of the Moment: Yellow and Grey

I’ve been noticing on home decor blogs, in interior design magazines, and on Pinterest that there seems to be a great deal of using yellow and grey together as a color scheme when decorating a room.

At first, I was kind of thrown off by this combo, but then it steadily started to grow on me. It’s a soft color palette, and in the right pattern, can create a lot of visual interest. I found this great fabric from Hobby Lobby that I could envision on a sofa in a living room.

This grey and yellow combination is actually more of a mustard and slate color, but I really like it! The print is amazing and not too busy at all. The rooms below are definitely being saved to my Inspiration file. What do you think of this color combo?

Four Things Friday

I know I said I was going to take a break from blogging this week, but I couldn’t help myself: I had to share these great finds from around the Web with y’all!

Have  a great weekend!

1. I am dying to paint a wall in a gingham pattern! This tutorial looks pretty simple!

2. I love how this guest room looks like a train car! So fun!

3. These clever posters are perfect for a kitchen. So humorous!

4. I want to make these votives wrapped in cornhusks. They are so beautiful!

Look What We Found!

My love for thrift stores and “the hunt” for bargains on home goods came from my mom (cue the song “I Get It From My Mama”). She is often “popping in” to thrift stores, garage sales, and antique shops to see what treasures she might find.

On a trip to a local church-run thrift store, Mama found this amazing couch. It’ s about eight feet long and the wood detail needs to be painted (I’m thinking white), but I actually love the fabric color and pattern! It’s a pale blue, almost mint-y color with a subtle diamond pattern. The shape is so neat…I’m obsessed!

Couch Purchased from Thrift Store

I’m going to do some intense research to determine what style this couch is; I’m thinking it’s very Victorian since the shape and wood detailing is reminiscent of that time period.

Wood detailing

It would be great to put in a large living room atop layered rugs. The best part is it was only $165.00! I’m sure it would cost a lot more had it been at an estate sale or antiques shop.

Fabric Color and Pattern

Do y’all have any ideas for how I should paint it and/or reupholster it? I’d love suggestions!

K is for Kilim Rugs

I’m currently lusting after kilim rugs. Similar to my love for ikat fabric, kilim rugs have such cool patterns and add some spice to a space. They’re typically tapestry-woven rugs that can be either decorative or serve as prayer rugs. They are made in both Persian cultures and Balkan cultures.

I really want a brightly colored one that could go in either an office or a hallway. I’ve also seen the fabric used to cover a settee that was used in an entryway. Brilliant!

Hobby Lobby Fabric! Who Knew?

I have long been a huge fan of Hobby Lobby and their amazing selection of inexpensive accessories, furniture, and wall art. Their fabric selection has often been so-so until this past week! I went to grab some items I needed for an upcoming craft project, and I stopped by the fabric area to see what they had. I was blown away by their selection…ikat and chevron stripes abounded!

I’ve just been asked by a friend of mine to help decorate the home she and her husband-to-be have purchased, and I definitely plan to head to Hobby Lobby if we need to have anything re-upholstered. Check out these amazing fabrics!

Four Things Friday

Woo, it’s been a long week! I hope y’all have had a great week! Take some time this weekend to check out this stuff I found around the Web…

1. I loved this article about how to decorate a studio apartment. Great ideas for making the most of out of your small spaces.

2. Campaign dressers are my second favorite furniture obsession (the first being Chesterfield sofas). This one is so amazing!

3. I’ve finally found the perfect way to use maps as wallpaper! This was in House Beautiful and I’m madly in love. Must try it soon!

4. The print on this chair is FABULOUS. Not sure I would match it to the curtains, but it’s so funky and fun!

This is what the inside of my cabinet looks like…

I am a neat freak by nature, but my design cabinet has become unruly. I have fabric swatches, paint brushes, spray paint, and wallpaper samples stuffed everywhere! I thought it would be funny to show y’all what my cabinet looks like on a typical project day.

DIY Tray

This project was one of my favorite projects I’ve done thus far! I found it on Pinterest (the world’s best place for ideas) and knew I had to try it out.

The fabric I used was a sample that I thought about using for a previous project. You just need enough fabric to wrap around a cookie sheet, so I think the next time I do this project (I know I’m going to be giving these as Christmas gifts this year!) I’ll look for great fabric from the remnants bin at the fabric counter of my local craft store. This should be really inexpensive and provide just the right amount of fabric I’ll need to make my trays!

I purchased a cookie sheet for $2.00 at a thrift store and scrubbed it clean. I made sure the fabric fit all the way around the cookie sheet then cut off the extra fabric.

I sprayed spray adhesive on the front of the cookie sheet and wrapped the fabric around, making sure to press the fabric in tight around the corners and smoothing out any bubbles. Then, I sprayed adhesive on the back of the cookie sheet to stick the ends of the fabric down.

I then used fabric glue to glue on a piece of synthetic felt to the back to cover the rough edges of the fabric. Finally, I placed the ¼ thick acrylic sheet on the top, and Voila, instantly chic tray!

Fabric: Free

Spray Adhesive: $9.99 (I used the Michael’s 40% off coupon I cut out of the paper on this item since it was the most expensive, which means I actually got it for $6.00!)

Fabric Glue: $4.99

Cookie Sheet: $2.00

Synthetic Felt: $0.29

Acrylic Sheet: $4.00

Grand Total: $21.27 (With coupon for the spray adhesive, my total was actually just $17.28)

U is for Upholstery

Upholstery can make or break a piece of furniture. Done well, it can make an old couch purchased at a garage sale look like a million bucks. Done poorly, it can make a $5.00 thrift store chair look like, well, a $5.00 thrift store chair.

I have not yet learned the art of upholstery. I would love to take classes on how to do this, but for now, I let the professionals handle my upholstery needs. The last time I had something re-upholstered, it was kind of pricey. Purchasing the fabric and then paying someone to do the labor really adds up!

I’ve seen tutorials like this one on Pinterest, but I get worried about messing up! Has anyone tried these tutorials? If so, did they work for you? Learning how to do this myself would definitely cut down on cost. I think I’m going to challenge myself to try to upholster a small, inexpensive piece of furniture as an experiment.

I would love to learn how to upholster furniture to look like these pieces. Well, a girl can dream!

Q is for Quilts

Photo from Gap Interiors.

You may think of quilts as grandma-esque, but you can use them in different ways besides as your standard blanket or comforter.

Find an old quilt, cut it up, and use the fabric to make pillows! I did this with an old quilt I found at a garage sale and the pillows are a great addition to my window seat nook.

Make a fort. If you have small children (or if you want to feel like a little kid for a day), use a quilt to make a fort in your living room. Drape it over chairs and pretend away!

Use the quilt to cover a bench or cushion. An old quilt, well-worn, well-loved, and soft, is the perfect material for a comfy cushion.

Most quilts have such a rich history. When I find them at garage sales and thrift stores, I always wonder who made it and what each pattern or color represents. If you’re like my family, we have tons of old quilts that have been passed down from generation to generation. Go look in your attic, basement, or long forgotten trunk to see if you have any of these gems!
