An Interview with Victoria Smith of SF Girl By Bay

I’m so excited to share an email interview I conducted with one of my “blog crushes,” Victoria Smith of SFGirlByBay. I’ve long been a fan of her bohemian style and awesome interior design looks. I had the opportunity to meet her while at the Altitude Design Summit and it was such a thrill! Her outfit was, of course, effortlessly chic, and her advice to us neophyte bloggers was so helpful. Read on and learn from her!

Victoria of SFGirlByBay

1. What inspired you to start this blog?

Oh, I’m not exactly sure. I started in June 2006, as just a hobby at first – it was never meant to be my ‘job’, or I probably would have thought of a more appropriate name. I’ve always had a love of photography and interior design, as well as writing, and the blog seemed to encompass everything I was passionate about. I initially started the blog as a way to post photographs of my interiors in the hopes of being featured on one of Apartment Therapy’s home tours, and fortunately I was selected. Their blog post on my home tour directed traffic to my blog, and one thing lead to another. Over time, the blog grew a loyal readership and eventually became my full-time job.

2. What are some of your favorite projects you’ve done? Why?

I stripped and sanded down an old art deco buffet I found at a yard sale for $5. I refinished it and it’s beautiful. No one can believe it was only $5, so that makes me feel kind of proud.

3. What advice would you give to readers who want to redecorate their homes or start a project, but aren’t sure where to begin?

I think designing is an extension of your personality. It’s the place I know I feel most comfortable and feeds my creativity. I decorate using elements that really mean something to me, or make me feel happy when I see them. If you do that, you’ll build a room that you want to spend time in. I bought a white sofa with slipcovers, and it works as kind of a canvas to build around. I can change up the throws and pillows, and add vintage pieces to the room and create a whole new look — almost seasonal, as my moods change. So, I think if you follow your heart then you’ll represent yourself uniquely — since there’s only one you!

4. What are the five items/supplies every person should have in their home for any DIY project?

-Blue Masking tape

-An electric drill/screwdriver

-A level

-Exacto Blades & Knife

-Sewing Machine

-Electric Sander

5. Where do you get inspiration for your projects?

It might be easier to tell you what doesn’t inspire me. I’m a pretty visual person, so wherever I go it’s likely I’m taking photos either with my iPhone (I’m addicted to Instagram) or with my camera. The city of San Francisco is nonstop inspiring to me and everywhere I look there’s something beautiful and colorful. My friends are very creative and they inspire me endlessly. I love art and photography and books. Great stories and films inspire me. My very favorite film is Amelié – I’ve watched it probably 6-7 times. I love the story, but the set design is perfection.

I also love European design magazines, like Living Etc., Hus & Hem, Marie Claire Maison.

Two of my favorite blogs are Door Sixteen, written by Anna Dorfman – she designed my blog. Anna’s restoring a house in Newburgh, New York and it’s stunning. And I love Emma’s Blogg – an unending source of Scandinavian inspiration.

I find great inspiration from my friends on Twitter. They tweet, and I follow. The amount of creativity I find there is constant — from photography, to great interiors, to design, and fashion or even a great laugh. I’m pretty well addicted.

6. What do you think every home should have no matter the budget?

A comfy sofa, and a good mattress. Comfort is key.

7. Is there a design mantra you follow?

It’s kind of anti-mantra – No Rules!

8. If you are a novice DIY-er, what project would you suggest?

I think reupholstering a stool, or chair seat is fairly simple, if you’ve got a good staple gun.

9. What’s the number one way to make a room or piece of furniture look brand new or better?

Paint! I paint everything. And slipcovers are a great way to give new life to an old piece of upholstery.

10. How do you create luxe looks for less?

I really don’t do that many DIY projects, with the exception of painting, and sewing. I sew cushion covers using vintage fabrics I find at the flea market and that’s very inexpensive, but can give you a whole new look.

11. What is your favorite aspect of your blog?

I love the sense of community, and the creative friends that I’m surrounded by. It’s a constant source of inspiration, and a very supportive place to work and live.

An Interview with Michael Koontz of Koontz Company Furniture

Michael Koontz is the owner of Koontz Company Furniture, an interior design business and furniture retail store in Ocala, Florida. His work as a designer has been featured in publications such as Southern Living and Florida Design.

I sat down with Mr. Koontz to chat about interior design, what he believes every home should have in it, and the importance of function when decorating your home. I hope you learn as much from him as I did!

What do you think home should have in it (as far as furniture and décor is concerned) and why?

Function first, not décor. You have to have a place to sleep first, then a place to eat. You need to accomplish all the functions first before thinking about décor. I’d say it’s also important to spend as much as you can afford on a great mattress and box spring because they’ll last a long time and are a great investment, especially since “they” say we spend up to a third of our lives in bed!

What is your favorite room to decorate in someone’s home?

It’s good to start in the room where they’re going to be living the most. I’m a firm believer in setting up a room the way that the client is going to be living in it. Each room should have a function. I hate when people have a living room and a family room, but they do all of their activities in the family room and leave the living room to use when family members they don’t necessarily like come over.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a room that allows you to get away from the activity in your home, make it comfortable with great seating and have good lighting so you can relax with a book. Or you can capitalize on a room that has a great view, like our home at the lake does, and choose great upholstery that is both comfortable and pretty, so everyone can enjoy that room.

What advice would you give to people who want to make their home feel luxurious, but don’t have the budget to afford luxurious items?

Well, it depends on what your definition of luxury is. What do you define as luxury?

Nifty Thrifty Decorator: I guess I would define luxury as great sheets and pillows on a really comfy bed.

So, you define luxury as comfort. Now that you have a definition of luxury, you go about achieving that function. Like I said before, it’s pretty essential to have a great, comfortable bed. Sheets are very important, because sleep is important, and you feel good. You feel good about yourself when you have a good bed!

My idea of luxury is, like you, comfort and convenience. I don’t like anything to be pretentious. I like a great big comfortable bed. I don’t think luxury is all about money. I marvel at the fact that people don’t shop used furniture stores and thrift stores. There are some fantastic values there, but sometimes some people want brand-new, shiny stuff.

What are some problems you see when helping clients decorate their homes?

Oftentimes, you have conflicting focal points in a room. You either want to focus on the television or the mantle or the view or the pass-through to the kitchen. If you can get any of these focal points together, like a fireplace and a television, together in the same sightline, it makes it easier to arrange the furniture.

Also, scale. My clients think that a small room can only handle small furniture. Part of it is their reluctance to invest in something big. They’ll buy 40,000 little items because they’re more confident in their purchase. If they put their money in larger, more versatile pieces like a cabinet or an armoire, they could use these pieces in virtually any room of their home.

Where do you get your design inspiration?

Oh, I’m a plagiarizer from way back! I comb the magazines constantly; I just love them! I’m currently loving Garden & Gun.

Do you have a favorite color you like to decorate with?

Probably, but I’m not really aware of it. If I were working with you to help you decorate your home, on our first consultation, I would look in your closet to see what colors you favor. That gives me an idea of what colors you like. It’s also important to use the color wheel when deciding what colors to use as your primary hues and then which colors to accent with.

Do you have a design mantra that you follow?

“If you like it, it will work.”

I worked with one lady on her house for about three years and she started with nothing. We toured all the design centers, the stores, and looked at magazines for ideas. One day she found a rug that she really liked and went, “Oooh.” I asked her what she liked about it and she said she loved the colors. We were able to buy that little rug and we built the whole house around it. So, if you like it, it will work, trust me! It’s you that has to be happy; your taste is enough.

Interview with Annemarie of Brunch at Saks, Part Two

Brunch at Saks

Much like I did with Tamsyn Riley’s interview, I’ve broken Annemarie’s answers up into two blog posts so that y’all could digest the awesome information she provided. Make sure y’all add her blog to your Bookmarks! :)

 7. Is there a design mantra you follow?

I do not like a lot of clutter, so I stay on the minimal side when decorating. I always take a few things away after all is said and done.

 8. If you are a novice DIY-er, what project would you suggest?

I would suggest starting in a small space like your guest bathroom or entryway, and start by painting the walls a different color that you’ve always loved. It’s not necessarily a DIY, but it will immediately make your space look different, and you will feel extremely accomplished seeing your work everyday.

Then, I’d move onto some sort of furniture piece. Maybe browse Craigslist for an all wood chair or stool, sand it down, and re-stain or paint it. You’ll love using your new piece and, I think, by then you’ll be hooked on seeing what a transformation DIYs can have.

9. What’s the number one way to make a room or piece of furniture look brand new or better?

Go lighter. If it’s an older couch, reupholster with lighter, sturdier fabric. If it’s a chair or table, sand it down and give it a coat of light grey or cream-colored paint.

10. How do you create great projects while sticking to a budget? (How do you create luxe looks for less?)

This goes back to creating a plan. I always plan out everything I’ll need for a project beforehand (everything from tape to screws to accessories) and I go into it knowing how much it will cost. Once everything is laid out on paper, it’s easier to figure out exactly what you need, and you’ll find that oftentimes you can cut materials from the list that aren’t necessary.

11. You have a focus on gluten-free living on your blog. What inspired you to do this?

I was diagnosed with food allergies (gluten, dairy, soy, peanut, and walnuts being among the few) in 2010, so I spent that entire summer cooped up in my kitchen at night trying to make recipes that were “safe” for me. Once I started feeling more comfortable with the things I was cooking, I began sharing the recipes and quickly found so many others who were also gluten free and willing to share.

12. What is your favorite part/aspect of your blog?

I like being able to share things I love with others, whether it is a cute coat on sale, an apartment’s interiors in NYC, or a great gluten free eatery in LA.  I also love the connection aspect of blogging, and being able to “meet” other bloggers, like yourself, whom I can learn from, share with, and be inspired by.

13. Your blog has been recognized by Elle Décor.com and HGTV. How did this come about? What advice can you give up-and-coming bloggers to help get their names out there?

My best advice to new (and experienced) bloggers is to write as if no one is reading, meaning do not conform your style and interests to please others. If you blog about what you’re passionate about, others will be able to see your authenticity, and there is no greater reward to yourself than being genuine.

Also, don’t be afraid to make connections with other bloggers, whether it be on your blog itself, or Twitter, Facebook, etc. It can be nerve-wracking and a bit scary putting yourself out there, especially because most of these people you will never “meet”, but making a connection, if even with just one blogger, can make your entire experience worthwhile.  Once I really started connecting with other bloggers, I began receiving more opportunities in the world of blogging, which led to some of the partnerships I have now.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all of my questions, Annemarie!

An Interview with Annemarie from Brunch at Saks, Part One

Annemarie of Brunch at Saks

I’ve had the amazing opportunity to conduct email interviews with several bloggers whom I’d admire. I’m thrilled to share what I learned from Annemarie, the author of Brunch at Saks, a lifestyle, fashion, and home decor blog. She has so many awesome ideas and tips for DIYers and novice bloggers. Enjoy!

 1. What inspired you to start this blog?

I started Brunch at Saks in 2008 as a sort of online journal for all my home decor and fashion inspirations. At the time, sites like Pinterest weren’t available, and the folders on my computer were filling up quickly with images saved from the web, so I thought it would be easier and bit more organized to keep them labeled in a series of blog posts.

 2. What are some of your favorite projects you’ve done? Why?

My favorite blog projects so far have been my DIY crafts because I always like to see what I can make out of everyday objects. I also like working on collaborative projects with the CW Network and Warner Bros. on their television shows Hart of Dixie, Pretty Little Liars, and Gossip Girl. It’s always fun for me to merge my blog with current trends in fashion and home decor, and working on projects with these shows has allowed me to take a peek inside what is trending in the world of entertainment.

3. What advice would you give to readers who want to redecorate their homes or start a project, but aren’t sure where to begin?

My best advice when starting a project is to go in to it with a plan. Just like grocery shopping, when you make a list of everything you’ll need, and jot down rough estimates for pricing, you’ll be able to stay on track much easier and will find that the items you buy for the room will have purpose.

4. What are the five items/supplies every person should have in their home for any DIY project?

-A level. I use a level constantly for hanging photos and decorations. I’m also getting ready to paint horizontal stripes in our guest bathroom, which the level will be helpful with when it comes to outlining the walls prior to painting.

- A table saw, especially for cutting large pieces of wood like headboards.

-FrogTape , my favorite tape for painting.

-Sand paper or a handheld sander like this one for furniture makeovers,

-Lots of old sheets or blankets! It may sound silly, but I am always keeping old sheets for DIY projects because they can save your floors or patio when painting walls or making over furniture.

5. Where do you get inspiration for your projects?

Pinterest, Houzz, magazines like Veranda, House Beautiful, and Country Living, TV shows; anywhere and everywhere.

6. What do you think every home should have no matter the budget?

A good kitchen table. It’s the place where I like to spend the most time with family and friends.

An Interview with Tamsyn Riley of Max and Me: Part Two

I broke up the interview with Tamsyn into two parts so y’all could easily digest all of the amazing tips and suggestions she has. Here’s part two of my email interview with her…enjoy!

6. What do you think every home should have no matter the budget?

Art Created with a Sharpie

Art! It absolutely makes a house, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I have  DIY’ed a lot of the art in my home; it makes it so much more meaningful as well.

 7. Is there a design mantra you follow?

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” ~William Morris

 8. If you’re a novice DIY-er, what project would you suggest?

Again, I believe that a great place to start is by creating some art. Find some images that inspire you and create your own interpretation of them. You don’t need to be great at drawing or painting to create beautiful things. You just need to be inspired. :)

 9. What’s the number one way to make a room or a piece of furniture look brand new or better?

A fresh coat of paint will make both a room and a piece of furniture look fresh and new!

 10. How do you create great projects while sticking to a budget?

Sticking to a budget is probably the thing I find most difficult about creating things. I am working on it, though. I find that going to thrift shops, salvage yards, recycling centers and dollar stores can be a great way to find the things you need without spending a fortune.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my many questions, Tamsyn!
