How to Make a Bachelor Pad Attractive Yet Manly

Oh, the bachelor pad. That phrase alone connotes milk crates for seats, jumbo televisions that take up entire walls, massive sectional sofas, and posters of scantily clad women advertising alcoholic beverages. In short, the bachelor pad fails miserably at interior design.

Guys, I’m here to tell you that you don’t need “a woman’s touch” to make your space both inviting and attractive. Simple additions can make your home stylish yet still manly. Don’t worry, throw pillows aren’t involved.

1. Stick with a color scheme: It seems that guys have either one color they use predominantly throughout their home, which can be drab or many colors, which doesn’t allow your home to look cohesive and put together. Pick a color you like (I love hunter green, navy blue, grey, or black and white) and use this as the color for your walls and accent pieces (lamps, frames, etc.).

2. Limit the amount of sports memorabilia you display: I’m sure that as every man read that statement there was a collective gasp of disbelief. I understand that your sports teams are important to you (Go Yankees!), but there is no need to have it plastered in every room of your home. My boyfriend is a huge Gator fan and has done quite well at tastefully displaying his love for the Gators by hanging nicely framed memorabilia in specific areas of his home.

The key is to make sure that anything you display (posters, jerseys, etc.) is tastefully framed and not scattered throughout your home. If you can’t bear to put all of your beloved team’s gear in storage, I’d suggest creating a gallery wall of all your framed memorabilia. This will be both pleasing to the eye and create a cohesive, tasteful place for your items to be displayed.

3. Get a real couch: A sofa is a fantastic investment as far as furniture is concerned. If you find the right sofa, you can build your entire design scheme around it and it will last you for many years. That being said, PLEASE get rid of your futons, bean bags, stadium seating sofas, and lumpy Lazy boys. I’m sure they served you well in your college days, but it’s time to let them go. If a sofa is a bit out of your budget, you can always purchase a used couch and place a slipcover over it (slipcovers are everywhere! I love the ones at Target). You’ll be amazed at how this addition of a nice sofa can make a room appear pulled together and sophisticated.

4. Get a real bed: The time has come for you to have a real “big boy” bed. No more mattress on the floor or just a mattress and a box spring, but a real, honest to goodness bed. I know beds are super expensive, but you can mimic the appearance of a bed by having a headboard and something at the foot of the bed to serve as a footboard. For example, I love tufted headboards with nailhead trim (definitely manly!). Adding a trunk or bench at the end of the bed can act as a footboard as well as provide extra storage for blankets, DVDs, and other miscellaneous items.

5. Have great bedding: It’s important that your sleeping space be both comfortable and attractive. Pick a duvet coverlet that will serve you well during both the summer and winter months (for temperature adjustments) and have great looking pillows. I’m not suggesting throw pillows, but European shams (the kind for square pillows) really dress up a bed and make it look pulled together.

Translating Blair Waldorf’s Style into Interior Design

Okay, so Blair Waldorf isn’t actually a real world celebrity (she’s played by Leighton Meester), but her sense of style is known around the globe. Blair Waldorf is the less than angelic New York socialite on the CW’s Gossip Girl.

Blair’s wardrobe is amazingly glamorous. She always looks like she’s on her way to a black tie gala or a debutante ball. I think if her style was to be translated into an interior design look it would be reminiscent of  an Old Hollywood boudoir with mirrored furniture, claw foot tubs, Waterford crystal chandeliers, and luxurious bedding. Opulence and grandeur would definitely be the two words used to describe her interior design style.

Four Things Friday

Happy Friday to y’all! What are your plans for the weekend? Some of my good friends and I are hosting a baby shower for one of our longtime friends…I can’t wait to share pictures of the decor with y’all! I’ve been carefully planning and plotting for the past two months to make sure everything looks perfect.

Here are some things I’m loving from around the Web…

1. My little brothers and I always made blanket forts around our home when we were younger. Ours never looked this good, though!

2. This DIY tutorial looks so easy to do! Goodness, what would the world be like without spray paint?

3. This bed looks so neat, but what if you move a lot when you sleep? Makes me nervous!

4. I was recently shopping at Target and saw these amazing bedding items. I think it’s time to do a bedding overhaul for me! Excuse the black bands…I couldn’t move them out of the way without undoing the entire packaging!

Apartment Tour, Part Three

It’s now time to show y’all my favorite part of my apartment…my bedroom! I think every bedroom should serve as a restful, calming place where one can escape the hustle and bustle of every day life. I had an idea of what I wanted my bedding to look like (sumptuous sheets, fluffy pillows) and I worked tirelessly to make my idea come to fruition!

My headboard was made by the same amazing upholsterer who re-upholstered my seat cushions and armchairs. This green fabric was used to make slipcovers for my couches in college, and I knew I wanted to have green and white as the main color scheme in my room.

Headboard and Bedding

The bedding was purchased from Pottery Barn and it was actually not at all as expensive as I thought it would be. I found the bedding in the clearance section on PB’s website, but I was having difficulty purchasing it online. I called the Customer Service number and spoke with a lovely woman who told me that bedding was a part of their “call in” specials, and I would get an additional 15% off my order for calling in! I had no idea that Pottery Barn did this…they do it every day on various items (furniture, bedding, wall decor, etc.). The duvet cover, two standard shams, and two European shams were all purchased for just under $200.00, including shipping.

My lamps were a Christmas gift from my mom. She found them at a funky thrift store in Tampa. The lampshades were purchased at Lowe’s (their selection of lamp shades is great!) The side tables were found in my grandfather’s storage unit and were carefully restored by a furniture restorer in Tampa.

The trunk at the end of my bed served as my coffee table for three years of college and now holds all of my old issues of the New Yorker. The rug is very special to me because it was in my mom’s first apartment that she lived in after graduating from college. It was then used in my nursery when I was a baby, and has now become a part of my first apartment. Though my bedroom is carpeted, I think the rug adds great color and texture to the space.

Chair, Rug, and Trunk Area

The chair was a part of my patio set during college, but I wanted a chair on which I could place dresses and clothes when I was getting dressed. I spray painted the chair a soft lime green and had a yellow and white striped cushion made to fit. The painting above the chair is of women walking in high heels and it says, “Fashion.” It was purchased at Hobby Lobby.

Going Greek

I have been in love with the Greek Isles since my parents visited years ago and brought back beautiful pictures of their time there. The crisp white of the buildings in Mykonos against the backdrop of the deep blue hue of the Aegean Sea is the perfect color palette.

While I won’t be making any treks to that neck of the woods anytime soon, I am indulging in my love for all things Greek by adding this gorgeous duvet with the Greek key design from West Elm to my decor wish list.

The Greek key design, according to Wikipedia, is a form of a meander, which is a decorative border made up of a continuous line. This line is then shaped into a motif. These keys are thought to symbolize infinity and unity.

Now, if only I could spend infinity with a Greek shipping heir…
