My Top 3 Favorite Home Decor Stores

While I’m known to haunt thrift stores and garage sales (and even dive into a dumpster or two), I also like perusing the home decor selections at the following stores. These places are particularly good for finding an item that will tie your whole design scheme together like a lamp, a vase, or a frame.

Photo from Home Goods

1. Home Goods: This store is often combined with its sister stores, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. I discovered this magical place about two years ago, and I couldn’t believe that I’d gone so long in life without knowing about it! I think they have the best lighting selection. When decorating my brother’s room, my mom and I found the perfect lamp for his dresser for $35.00. Their lamps are super attractive and wired well, so they’re sure to last you a long time.

2. Tuesday Morning: This place is a bargain shopper’s Mecca. I’ve always had great luck finding rugs (ranging from bath mats to full area rugs) here. If you sign up for their email list, they’ll let you know when sales are going to be happening, what’s on clearance, and provide you with various coupons. Sometimes you really have to dig to find the good stuff, but I almost always walk away with just the right item for my design scheme.

3. World Market: We don’t have one of these amazing stores near where I live in Florida, but there’s one in South Carolina where my brothers attend college, and I try to get by there whenever I visit the boys. They have a great combination of plates and place mats as well as furniture, curtains, and other home decor accessories. Their decor has a bohemian vibe to it, which I think is great, especially if you purchase one of their items and work it into a more traditional decor style.

B is for Bar

The key to having a welcoming home (and being a great hostess) is having a well-stocked bar. I found this great X-legged tray table at a consignment store for $40.00 There’s an awkward amount of wasted space under the stairs in my apartment, so I decided to turn that area into the bar space.

I had a professional attach glass on the bottom and sides of the tray and placed my thrift-store glass finds on top (the decanter is from the Salvation Army…for $5.00!)

It’s always best to have a professional handle the installation of glass because if you’re not careful, a finger could be lost! Most glass and window shops can place mirrored glass on any item for a set price.

I love the trunk idea for this bar! What are other things you could turn into a bar?

Everything you see here was either dirt cheap or free! Here’s a snapshot of what we spent…

See what AMAZING things you can do with just a bit of paint and fabric? A room (and your attitude about it) can completely change with just one coat of paint!

While we did a complete overhaul of this living room, smaller, subtler changes can be made to any room just by switching up the art work or putting new, patterned pillows on a couch or chair.

I’m so pumped about the way everything turned out! I hope this project inspires y’all to look at your rooms differently. Every room in your home should be beautiful, no matter your budget!

Great Art Work Ideas…For Cheap!

Art work is usually one of the most expensive items to purchase for your home decor. I think it’s also the most personal aspect of your room. You want to have drawings, paintings, or photographs that are special to you or represent who you are in some way.

As I’ve noted before, it’s been especially hard finding art work for my best friend’s apartment, not only because of our differences in taste with art, but because art work is so pricey.

Well, I think I’ve solved the issue! I went to a local used book store and bought books with pictures of the beach, the water, and nature. Seven books cost me a grand total of $11.00!

Next, I cruised over to the Dollar Store (one of my fave places ever!) and found large black and white frames for $6.00 each.

I plan to cut out the pictures from the used books and place them in the Dollar Store frames. Hung in a series of four or six, they’re a cheap yet pretty way to decorate a room!

If photography isn’t your style of art, you can purchase canvases from your local craft store (they usually come in packs of two for $10.00-$12.00) and several bottles of different colored paint. Release your inner Jackson Pollock by splashing the paint on the canvas any way you want. This is also a cheap and easy way to create modern art work for your space!

Another idea for cheap and easy art work is to buy fabric from the remnants area of the fabric section in your local craft store. This fabric can then be stretched over and stapled to a canvas. Voila…art!

Extreme Makeover: Apartment Edition Updates!

I hit the pavement again this weekend to finish getting all of the furniture, fabric, and other decor items to re-decorate my best friend’s apartment. I found some awesome items at great prices!

These two end tables were only $14.99 each at a Salvation Army thrift store! I’m thinking I’m going to paint them a deep green with a lacquered finish, so the effect will be high gloss and ultra stylish.

The mirror was also a steal! It was $12.99 at the Salvation Army. I’m toying with the idea of making it a coral color or an aqua hue. The room needs some “pops” of color, so I think painting the mirror a bright shade could add some much-needed “zing and zest” to the room.

I found discounted fabrics that I’ll make into throw pillows for the couch and a seat cushion for the iron chair I purchased last weekend. I didn’t realize how expensive fabric is…it took visiting many stores and viewing countless racks of fabric to find ones that I both liked and could afford!

A tip I would suggest is when perusing stores (any stores…thrift stores, massive retail stores, etc.), look at the sheets, shower curtains, and pillow cases for sale. These could offer enough material to make pillows or cushions without breaking the bank!

My best friend’s apartment is in need of art work to add warmth and interest to her living room, but I discovered that finding art work that she would like and that would go with the theme of the space was incredibly difficult.

So, it’s still an ongoing process to find art work for her apartment. I’m thinking about making my own art work (canvases are on sale at many craft stores) and using that to add interest to her walls. If you have any suggestions for art work for the design project, dear readers, please let me know!

Found: Great Steals and Deals!

A search of thrift stores and garage sales paid off mightily yesterday! I was able to find some key pieces that will allow me to begin re-decorating my best friend’s apartment.

My plan is to keep as much of her original furniture and refurbish it (using slipcovers, throw pillows, paint, et cetera). The pieces I found will only enhance her living and dining rooms. Finding these pieces got me really excited for this project!

Below are some of the items I picked up yesterday. With her “beach-y” theme in mind, I looked for pieces that were light and airy. All of them will be repainted (our next adventure will be picking out the paint) and then set in her newly-redecorated apartment!

First, I found this awesome long, wooden coffee table. I plan to repaint it and add a glass top. It was only $15.00!

Then I discovered this awesome iron chair that I’m going to repaint and recushion. I’ll pick out cute fabric to recover the cushion and paint the frame a color that pops!

I found some other great items, but I’m going to keep those a secret until the big reveal! Check back often for updates!

Bargain Shop at These Stores!

There are so many second-hand stores that offer amazing pieces of furniture, art work, fabric, and other home decor items for awesome prices. My favorite part is that you are not only saving money by shopping at these second-hand stores, you are also contributing to the mission of the organizations that sponsor these stores. It’s a win-win for everyone!

-Salvation Army thrift stores

-Hospice thrift stores

Other places where I’ve found great items:

Garage Sales (Check listings in the classifieds and/or local sections of your hometown newspaper. The website, Garage Sale Finder, also provides a way for you to find garage sales in your area).

Estate Sales (Check listings in the classifieds and/or local sections of your hometown newspaper. There are also a number of websites that will let you know where and when estate sales are happening in your area. Just Google “estate sales” and enter your location and you should get results immediately!)

Fine arts festivals hosted by your hometown (Awesome local art work can be purchased here. You support an up-and-coming artist and have a piece of art that represents where you call home!)

Consignment Shops (You can often find name-brand furniture at these stores at more than half the price! Make friends with the owner and/or employees and they’ll often let you know when they’re expecting a new wave of furniture and other home decor items).

Go Forth and Find Those Bargains!

Many second-hand thrift stores offer deals on certain items on specific days. For example, Salvation Army thrift stores designate Wednesdays as the day when items that are marked with a specific colored tag (red, white, or yellow) are drastically reduced in price.

Second-hand stores that benefit philanthropic organizations (Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, etc.) often have the option of purchasing a paper bag for a small sum (usually $5.00 to $10.00) and then filling the bag up with as many items as you’re allowed to put in the bag (usually smaller, “knick knack” items, but these can be just what you need to complete a look!)

Though home decor stores like Pottery Barn are often expensive, I’ve found that calling their 1-800 number to place your order (rather than doing so online) can yield an abundance in savings. The stores will often have “call in specials” running on specific items. Occasionally, items already on clearance can be marked down an additional amount. You may have to push a few buttons to reach a “real” person, but it’s totally worth it!

When shopping at consignment stores, always make sure to check the date on the tag of the item to see when it was brought in to be sold. Often times, if the item has been there for more than three weeks, you can name a price (say a love seat was listed for $300.00, you could offer to pay $250.00 or even $225.00), and then the employee of the consignment store will call the individual who left the item to be sold to see if they will accept that price. You may get rebuffed, but it’s worth a try!
